Comic Relief has offered support to organisations it funds in Nepal, following the earthquake on April 25.
More than 7,800 people have died during the 7.8-magnitude quake and thousands more have been injured.
Since 2003 Comic Relief has awarded grants totalling £8 million to improve the lives of children and young people at risk, especially street and working children. After the earthquake Comic Relief contacted the seven organisations it funds in Nepal, expressing concern about people’s welfare and asking them about any major impact the crisis is having on the staff, partners, activities and communities they work with.
The projects were also informed that Comic Relief will consider requests for a 'change of use' of their grants, to address immediate needs. It is hoped that this flexibility will help to protect the lives of project staff and beneficiaries and to help preserve the progress projects have made, as well as to recover from the impact of the disaster.
Comic Relief is also looking at providing additional funding to a small number of organisations working on the ground in affected communities.
