It’s the Great Sport Relief BIKE Off!
Double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell has today (Monday 14th March) announced that he will be saddling up for Sport Relief 2016 in a challenge dubbed The Great Sport Relief Bike Off.
The Olympian hopes to hop on the saddle of a retro Raleigh Chopper and set a Sport Relief record for the furthest distance ridden on a Chopper in one hour. He’ll spend sixty minutes on the less than ergonomic saddle doing laps at the world famous LeeValley VeloPark attempting one of sport’s most demanding challenges on one of history’s most iconic bicycles.
At the same time, a team of cyclists and celebrities including Sally Gunnell, Alastair Campbell and Mike Bushell will attempt to cycle circles around him as they also take on a Guinness World Record for the most people to cycle a kilometre in one hour.
The double-wheeled challenge will be filmed in front of a live audience at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Friday 18th March, during the fun filled Sport Relief Night of TV on BBC One.
However, the results of the record-breaking efforts won’t be revealed until Sunday 20th March, when The Great Sport Relief Bike Off airs during the Sport Relief Games Show at 1.15pm on BBC One.
James Cracknell said: “It’s going to require a lot of pedal power, but I’m excited to push myself to the limit and set a new Sport Relief record on my trusty Chopper. I feel hugely proud to support such an amazing charity and hopefully inspire people to take on their own challenges in the Sport Relief Games. Get fit, have fun and raise much-needed cash to transform lives here in the UK and around the world.”
There’s still time for you to get involved – take on your own challenge and sign up to the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games now at sportrelief.com.
